Cleaning & Maintenance Instructions
Proper care is essential to maintain the beauty and durability of leather products. Follow these instructions to keep your leather hides, cowhide rugs, and other leather products in top condition.
1. General Leather Care Tips
✅ Keep leather away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.
✅ Avoid excess moisture and humidity, as it can cause mold or damage.
✅ Do not place leather hides or rugs near heaters or fireplaces, as heat can dry out the leather.
2. Cleaning Cowhide & Leather Rugs
🧹 Routine Cleaning:
- Shake out the rug regularly to remove dust and dirt.
- Use a soft brush or vacuum (low suction, no beater bar) to clean.
💧 Spot Cleaning:
- If there is a small spill, quickly blot it with a dry cloth—do not rub.
- Use a mild soap solution (a few drops of baby shampoo in warm water) and a damp cloth to gently wipe the area.
- Avoid soaking the rug or using harsh detergents.
🚫 Stain Removal:
- For oil-based stains, sprinkle cornstarch or talcum powder and let it sit for a few hours before brushing it off.
- If needed, use a leather conditioner to restore the hide’s natural texture.
3. Cleaning Goat & Sheep Hides
- Shake out dust and use a soft-bristle brush to maintain texture.
- For spills, use a damp cloth with mild soap and gently clean the area.
- Avoid soaking; too much moisture can cause stiffness.
- Keep away from pets that may scratch or chew the hide.
4. Leather Storage Tips
- Store leather hides flat or rolled (never folded) in a cool, dry place.
- Use breathable fabric covers instead of plastic to prevent moisture buildup.
- If storing long-term, apply a leather conditioner occasionally to maintain softness.
5. Dealing with Odors
Since leather is a natural material, it may have a mild scent when first received. To reduce odors:
- Air out the hide in a well-ventilated space for 24-48 hours.
- Avoid chemical deodorizers—let the leather breathe naturally.
